Thoughts on playoffs, round two
Just a few thoughts on round two of the high school football playoffs:1. A big hand for the season the West Florence Knights put together. They made the playoffs again and this time, were in the mix for the Region 6-4A title. One of the best defenses around, and the offense held its own this year as well. Another W or so and the Knights might not have played unbeaten South Pointe (11-0 and a No. 3 seed? Might be time to rethink the Class 4A point system). But don't worry. You'll be seeing several of the Knights on Saturdays from now on, and one or two could wind up playing on Sundays.
2. I said last week not to sleep on Manning. The Monarchs are playing as well as anybody right now, and it wouldn't surprise me a bit to see them in the Class 2A lower state championship game. They'll face either Timberland or Cheraw most likely, and the winner will more than deserve the bus ride to Clemson.
3. Tough end for Timmonsville. The Whirlwinds had Scott's Branch where they wanted them, but failed to protect a lead. Timmonsville has gone for two every score this season because of kicking woes, and it hurt them in this game. Antonio McAllister had another big game, which comes as a surprise to no one. McAllister and Cheraw's Travis Small weren't selected to any all-star games, and that's a big oversight.
