Can baseball season top basketball?
The baseball season is in full swing and I’m excited to see how the local teams will respond after an awesome run of high school basketball. Coach Hal Lambert leads a young Mullins team, while Marion skipper Don Cribb returns to Marion after a year hiatus. The Swamp Foxes are an intriguing group, loaded with veteran players like catcher Martin Gasque, infielders Russ White and Sam Maddox, along with pitchers Ross White and Justin Gause. With a 5-0 record to begin region play, I think this team will follow up on last year’s playoff appearance with a deep run.
Creek Bridge baseball coach Dana Fall is in his second year, helping to get a relatively new program off the ground.
When it comes to softball, Lynn Shelley and her Lady Swamp Fox team should be much improved, especially with the arm of pitcher Danielle Spivey.
This is also the time I look forward to watching some Atlanta Braves baseball. It’s hasn’t been easy the past couple of years, and losing out on my favorite player of all-time Ken Griffey Jr. was a heartbreaker. However, I’m a little optimistic with the great Chipper Jones, Brian McCann, Jeff Fancoeur, and Yunel Escobar returning. Newcomers Garrett Anderson and Casey Kotchman appear to be solid additions. Jordan Schafer has to produce, but the one thing all Braves fans know, that it’s the pitching staff that must hold up. Ace Tim Hudson starts the season on the 60-DL, Tom Glavine returns, but gone is “Smolzty!” So I’m counting on the likes of Derek Lowe, Javier Vaszquez, and closer Mike Gonzalez.
World Series picks for me; holding out on the Braves facing “The Soxs” from Boston.
Bloggers Note: A few notable MLB players from South Carolina are: Harry Gladwin Byrd, Daniel Driessen, Ford Garrison, Jason Hammel, Orlando Hudson, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Willie Edward Jones, William Oliver O'Dell, Willie Randolph, Bobby Richardson, Jim Rice, Pokey Reese, Mookie Wilson, Reggie Sanders, and Larry Doby.
